RD: Task 4: Moodboard Task-Psychological Thrillers

Here is my moodboard task on psychological thrillers, as we can see there is stock characters and locations. In psychological thrillers we usually see that the antagonist has some kind of mental disorder and often wears a mask. This sub-genre is often set in houses or others regular places.

RD: OLD location planning reccie

Purpose of Location Reccie
The purpose of a location reccie is to asses the location and see if it is suited for your film. We are looking at wilderness woods as a potential location so we need to see if it is an appropriate set and do a risk assessment.

Risk Assessment
A risk assessment is a systematic process of evaluating the potential risks that may be involved in filming at a potential location or set. Our location is wilderness woods.
We have identified these risks:

• There is a pond so there is a risk of falling in this risk can be minimised by mapping out where to go and watching where you walk.
• There is a risk of getting stung or cut by stinging nettles or brambles so these need to be avoided when mapping out the plan.
• It may be slippery if it is wet so we must wear appropriate footwear with grip.
• Getting lost in the woods is possible so we must keep our phones on us at all times.

Planning

• One of the sub-genres we are thinking about is slasher, so this will give us a chance to try that out.
• We are thinking about doing a girl being stalked in the wood.
• It will also give us an opportunity to try out different camera shots and angles.
• Help to recognise what is effective and what isn't.

F.L - Plot Synopsis

Plot Synopsis: 

The film will start with a white-collared man coming home from work, entering through the door, hanging his coat etc (normal monotonous daily routine). The scene will then lead into the kitchen where the man will greet his wife, continuing his routine, such as making a cup of tea. After some ‘normal’ conversation between the husband and wife, the woman will then mention a noise from down stairs asking if he can “see what is going on”. The man will then proceed to go downstairs to the basement where he shall enter a room full of people in cages and dead bodies on the floor. The man will then have a conversation with the people in the room/talk to himself  (therefore showing his mental state). There will be shots showing newspaper cuttings, scribbles and photos all over the walls. The scene will then cut to his wife coming down the stairs and the tension will build for the audience, however as the wife enters the room it appears that she knows about this. There will then be a shot where eye contact between the wife and a victim in the room is shared, the audiences last hope is the wife, and now knowing that she is in on the plan too the audience will feel very at ease. The wife will then calmly say that the dinner is ready and they will both exit the room.

Hi everyone, I am really excited to join your group and hopefully some of the past work I have done will also be helpful to the idea of our final piece, I will post all my past work now and if you guys have any ideas please comment. So happy to be a new member!

Group: Audience Feedback on Wilderness Woods Film Clip

What techniques were particularly effective?:

• The way we sync'd our non diegetic sound with our shots - Helped to create tension
• Our establishing shots - Set the scene for the audience.
• Good cutting rate - We try to cut most of our clips with motivation so they flowed well.
• Narrative - Our story was simple but yet leading for the audience.
• 360 pan - Just after Freddie wakes up we include him looking to the sky with a 360 pan, this expresses his disorient of the situation.
• Visceral - Our sound as well as continuity style editing help keep viewers on edge.

Which techniques could be improved?:

• Lack of dialogue - We had no dialogue in our clip so it might of helped if we included some sort of dialogue between Freddie and the antagonist or even just a phone call.
• Eyes at bridge was too short - Our bridge clip was a very good idea but we didn't have enough footage to make it as effective as it could of been.

How can we use this information in our next filming task?:

• Group 7 used a very good scene involving a phone call which positioned us with the character, this would also allow us to include dialogue so we will take this into consideration when storyboarding for our next task.
• We were limited on filming time for this task so we knew we would have less footage than we wanted but we didn't realise how many takes we need of one scene so in future we will take a lot longer in making sure we have the correct shot.
